Audition Guidelines

Music Audition

The music audition serves two purposes: entrance for music majors into any degree program, and scholarships for any qualified student, regardless of major.

Audition Requirements

Candidates audition before a music faculty committee that will evaluate technique, musicianship, tone quality, and sight-reading ability. Prepare carefully for your audition in order to demonstrate your best ability.

• Instrumentalists should prepare two shorter selections in contrasting styles from the standard literature (or one longer work) that best display musical accomplishments. Major scales and chromatic scale may also be requested. Instrumentalists are not required to perform with accompaniment. Percussionists should prepare a snare drum solo and basic rudiments, and either a timpani or mallet instrument solo.

• Vocalists should prepare a minimum of two art songs or arias. It is recommended that one of these is in Italian and one in English. Music theatre auditionees may prepare one Broadway show tune as their English selection. If the vocalist cannot bring an accompanist, one will be provided.

Audition Tapes

Where considerable travel is involved, the candidate may submit a video cassette tape recording. The taped audition should include about 10 minutes of music from the standard literature as indicated above.

Theory Placement Exam

All prospective music majors are required to take a theory placement exam that will be given prior to the start of the fall semester. The exam will evaluate note reading, scales, keys, intervals and chords.

Audition Dates

Music auditions will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on the Jacksonville University campus on the following Saturdays: October 19 and November 16, 2002; January 25 and February 22, 2003.

To schedule an audition, complete the audition registration form or call the Music Department at 904-745-7370.
