As a psychology major you will be required to take a number of courses. In addition to course work qualified psychology majors are encouraged to participate in internships and supervised research projects.
Internships are usually taken for 6 hours credit and require that students work in local social service programs for at least 18 hours per week. A student works with a faculty member to select the appropriate placement. Grades are based on a student paper describing their experience and an evaluation by their supervisor at the program. The internship page describes some of our recent internships .
Student research can be pursued as an independent study project or as a departmental honors project. Independent study projects can receive up to six hours of academic credit. The student typically is supervised by a single faculty member.
Departmental honors projects are available for senior psychology majors with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above. The student selects a board of at least three faculty members who supervise the project. With the successful completion of the research the student graduates with departmental honors in psychology. The student research page includes descriptions of a number of recent independent study and Departmental honors projects.
Students completing research projects are encouraged to share their work at the Jacksonville University Undergraduate Research Symposium which convenes during the spring semester. Psychology students are also encouraged to submit their research for presentation in the student division at the yearly convention of the Southeastern Psychological Association.
JU requires all students to participate in 50 hours of community service. The community service page lists a number of sites where psychology majors have fulfilled this requirement.
JU has a chapter of Phi Chi, the national honors organization for psychology majors.
