Alternative Certification

Are you ready to transition into a teaching career? Jacksonville University offers several options for professionals with bachelor’s degrees who want to earn a teaching certificate and make a career change.

Florida and other states are suffering from a critical teacher shortage. You can be part of the solution. Put your own experience and knowledge to work by earning a teaching certificate and entering the education profession.

  • Certification courses are offered in elementary education, business, English, mathematics, science and social studies.
  • Evening classes fit the schedule of working professionals.
  • It’s easy to get started. Applicants are NOT required to take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination).
  • In less than one year of study, you could be ready to apply for your teaching certification.
  • Coursework for a teaching certificate may later be used toward a Master of Arts in Teaching degree at JU. With your certification courses completed, you’ll be well on your way to an advanced degree.
  • Small classes taught by award-winning faculty mean that you get the personal attention you need to be successful in your career transition.
  • All programs meet the requirements of the Florida Department of Education for teaching certification.

SCAAT – Second Career as a Teacher

The SCAAT Program is a unique offering designed to help career transition candidates enter the education field and earn certification quickly. This fast-track program was designed in consultation with the U.S. Navy to serve retired and soon-to-be-retired employees who hold a bachelor’s degree. The program is also open to those outside the military.

SCAAT prepares new teachers for secondary level posts in critically understaffed fields such as math and science. Students may also pursue other secondary level specialties and elementary education.

  • Like other certification programs at Jacksonville University, the SCAAT program is approved by the State of Florida.
  • The SCAAT program is taught in two locations. One is on campus, and the other is at Naval Air Station Jacksonville.
  • A significant tuition discount is available for military personnel and their dependents taking classes at NAS Jacksonville.
  • The fast-track program at NAS Jacksonville includes 16-18 semester hours of coursework in five consecutive eight-week sessions, plus a six-hour internship. Classes meet only two nights per week.
  • In just one year, you can complete the requirements for the Florida Department of Education teaching certificate!
  • SCAAT students at NAS Jacksonville can enter the program at any one of the five class start dates: August, October, January, February, May. On-campus students can enter at the beginning of any of the three semester start dates.
