The Physical Education program has grown to include three tracks – Teaching, Sports Administration, and Exercise Science. Graduates of the program have started careers as physical education teachers and coaches in the schools; as fitness instructors and trainers; with major and minor sports teams; and in other sports, health and fitness-related positions. The teaching track is a state-approved program that leads to certification for K-12 physical education.
Physical education faculty and students have access to a variety of on-campus facilities and resources, including Swisher Gym, fitness center and weight room; pool; and facilities for tennis, volleyball, baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, football and other sports. As part of the Physical Education Majors Club, students promote health and wellness through community service projects such as Family Fitness Nights at local elementary schools; the Special Olympics; and a challenger softball game with local school children with disabilities.
The Physical Education teaching track is designed for students who wish to teach and coach in public and private school settings. The program is state-approved for the highest level of teaching certification in Florida. The award-winning faculty in the School of Education and specifically in the Physical Education area lead the integrated curriculum. Students take traditional education courses, physical activity courses and health and fitness courses. Through a student teaching experience at the end of the program, students have an opportunity to put their knowledge and skills to work in the field. |
