The Physical Education program has grown to include three tracks – Teaching, Sports Administration, and Exercise Science. Graduates of the program have started careers as physical education teachers and coaches in the schools; as fitness instructors and trainers; with major and minor sports teams; and in other sports, health and fitness-related positions. The teaching track is a state-approved program that leads to certification for K-12 physical education.
Physical education faculty and students have access to a variety of on-campus facilities and resources, including Swisher Gym, fitness center and weight room; pool; and facilities for tennis, volleyball, baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, football and other sports. As part of the Physical Education Majors Club, students promote health and wellness through community service projects such as Family Fitness Nights at local elementary schools; the Special Olympics; and a challenger softball game with local school children with disabilities.
In response to growing demand for highly trained professionals for the sports and fitness industries, Jacksonville University created the Sports Administration track within the Physical Education major. The program combines coursework in physical education and business for a special focus on sports and management in today’s marketplace. Students learn from the Physical Education faculty and professors from the Davis College of Business.
Through field experiences and internships, students work alongside sports professionals and gain valuable hands-on experience in a variety of settings. Graduates of this program are well prepared for positions in intercollegiate and professional sports, sports marketing, recreation administration, facility management, the physical fitness industry, community-based sports programs and more.
